Professionalism is nothing without professionally written texts. This is particularly important when it comes to communicating with your clients and successfully showcasing your products. Of course, it comes down to using the right specialist terminology in the right place. But it’s also a question of carefully adapting your content to the different facets and modes of expression found in the target culture. Sometimes, it can also be the tiny, subtle nuances that are read between the lines. And misunderstandings can quickly get costly.

A certified translator and university-educated interpreter for German, English and Spanish, I have over ten years’ experience in the industry and would be happy to provide you with support and advice for all your language needs – and thus help you on your own path to success! About me

In a nutshell – proven linguistic expertise with finesse and flair

Born and raised in Germany, I’ve spent time in places as varied as Spain, Tanzania and Singapore on my journey through life. And, even though travelling is still one of my favourite things to do, I’ve been happily settled in my adopted home of Vienna since 2013.

I’ve been involved in the language services sector for the past 13 years. Starting out as an in-house translator and now working freelance, I’ve got to know the industry from many different sides. I’ve also gained more specialist knowledge by obtaining qualifications such as the ATA Certification, the UNIVERSITAS Austria Certification and the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Certificate as well as attending numerous professional development courses. The importance I attach to the continuous development of our industry has also been demonstrated in the many years I served as a Member of the Board (two years as Secretary-General) of UNIVERSITAS Austria (Austrian Interpreters’ and Translators’ Association).

In the work I do with my clients, it is important to me that the whole package is right. Besides professional project management and a top-quality professional service, this also means listening to what my clients want and need and treating everyone with respect and discretion.

A world away from dry theory…

Engineering

Engineering was the first specialism that I mastered, right back at the beginning. It was during a placement in the tunnelling industry back when I was doing my degree that I discovered my fascination for this field of work. Working as an in-house translator and project manager at a company of the glass industry then gave me the opportunity to acquire an in-depth technical knowledge, not least by working together with experts based in different countries. For me, this also means seeing the relevant machinery in action or trying out the tools for myself now and again – giving me the hands-on experience needed for a truly comprehensive understanding.

Drawing on my many years’ experience, I cover the following engineering specialisms in my work as a freelance translator:

Law

Translating legal texts calls for particular flair and finesse as well as highly specialised knowledge – of both the legal language and the relevant area of law. Even minor misunderstandings can be disastrous in this discipline, especially since the same term can have different meanings in different legal systems and thus call for different translations.

To prove that I was up for this challenge, I obtained the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Certificate with distinction in 2019 following two years of university study.

Transcreation…

…giving words wings

“Transcreation” is a portmanteau of “translation” and “creation”. This service, which is enjoying increasing demand in the industry, thus means combining translation and copywriting in such a way that the target text is adapted from one culture to another and localised for the target market – when a plain translation just won’t cut the mustard. It’s often used for marketing and advertising copy. To get it right, you frequently need to come up with new ways of wording an idea and deploy a lot of linguistic skill to ensure that the message has the same impact and evokes the same emotions in the target culture. Above all, transcreation calls for eloquence, fluency and rhetorical accuracy in your native language and has more stages than plain translation (briefing, initial translation/draft version, creative editing, copywriting – through to producing the linguistically adapted final version of the original content).

For me, transcreation serves as a creative counterpoint to the kind of technical and legal content that makes up the rest of my work. It gives my creative side a runout and lets me break new linguistic ground.
And, of course, it ensures that your message will be received loud and clear by your target audience!
